Ethical Clearance Statement
Research involving human participants, including interviews, surveys, observation, and focus groups, must be conducted ethically and reported transparently.
What authors must provide
- Ethics approval: the name of the approving committee or institutional review board and the approval number, in the Methods section.
- Exemption: if the study was exempt from review, a statement of who granted the exemption and why. The editors may ask for the exemption document.
- Informed consent: confirmation that participants gave informed consent, and how it was obtained.
- Consent for publication: where a person could be identified from text, images, or quotations, written consent for publication from that person (or a guardian), and a statement in the article that it was obtained.
- Confidentiality: anonymised data and pseudonyms unless participants agreed to be named.
Research must follow the Declaration of Helsinki principles and any national regulations that apply. Studies of minors or vulnerable groups require particular care. The editors may decline a manuscript that does not meet these requirements, and concerns are handled under the Publication Ethics Statement.
