Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement
Jurnal Sains Dasar (JSD) is committed to upholding the highest standards of research integrity and publication ethics. All parties involved in the publication process — authors, editors, reviewers and the publisher — must comply with this statement. JSD follows the COPE Core Practices, the COPE Flowcharts and the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing.
1. Duties of Authors
1.1 Originality and plagiarism
- Authors must submit entirely original work. Any use of the words, data, figures or ideas of others must be properly cited.
- Plagiarism in any form, including self-plagiarism and translation plagiarism, is unacceptable (see Plagiarism Policy).
1.2 Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication
- Authors must not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time.
- Authors must not publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal ("salami slicing").
- Manuscripts previously presented at a conference, seminar or forum are not accepted.
1.3 Data accuracy and integrity
- Authors must report data accurately and present an objective discussion of their significance.
- Fabrication (inventing data) and falsification (manipulating data, equipment or processes) are serious misconduct.
- Images must not be manipulated beyond uniform adjustments of brightness and contrast applied to the whole image; no element may be added, moved, removed or enhanced.
- Authors must retain raw data and provide them to the editor upon request, for at least [5] years after publication.
1.4 Authorship
- Only persons who meet all authorship criteria may be listed as authors (see Authorship Policy). Gift, guest and ghost authorship are prohibited.
- All co-authors must approve the final manuscript and its submission.
1.5 Acknowledgement of sources and funding
- Authors must acknowledge all funding sources and all sources of data, materials and assistance.
- Information obtained privately (conversation, correspondence) must not be used without explicit written permission.
1.6 Disclosure and conflicts of interest
- Authors must disclose any financial or non-financial conflict of interest that might influence the results or their interpretation.
1.7 Research involving humans, animals and biological resources
- Studies on human participants must have approval from an ethics committee and written informed consent, in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki.
- Studies on animals must follow institutional and national guidelines (e.g., ARRIVE) and have ethics approval.
- Collection and use of protected species and genetic resources must comply with national regulations and the Nagoya Protocol.
- The ethics committee name and approval number must be stated in the manuscript.
1.8 Use of generative AI
- AI tools cannot be authors. Any AI-assisted writing must be declared, and AI must not be used to create or alter data, images or references (see Generative AI Policy).
1.9 Errors in published works
- When authors discover a significant error in their published work, they must promptly notify the editor and cooperate to correct or retract the article.
2. Duties of Editors
- Publication decisions: the editor is responsible for deciding which manuscripts are published, based on scientific merit, originality, clarity and relevance, guided by reviewers' reports and the journal's policies.
- Fair play: manuscripts must be evaluated without regard to the authors' race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic origin, citizenship, political views or institutional affiliation.
- Confidentiality: editors must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers and editorial staff.
- Disclosure: unpublished material must not be used in an editor's own research without the author's written consent.
- Conflicts of interest: editors must recuse themselves from manuscripts where they have a conflict of interest; manuscripts by editors are handled by another editor through the full double-blind process.
- Independence: editorial decisions must not be influenced by the publisher, sponsors, payment of the APC or any commercial consideration.
- Investigation: editors must respond to every credible allegation of misconduct according to COPE flowcharts, even after publication.
3. Duties of Reviewers
- Contribution: peer review assists the editor in making decisions and helps authors improve their work.
- Promptness: a reviewer who feels unqualified or cannot complete the review on time must notify the editor and decline immediately.
- Confidentiality: manuscripts must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to, discussed with, or uploaded to any person or tool, including generative AI tools.
- Objectivity: reviews must be conducted objectively, with clearly supported arguments. Personal criticism of authors is inappropriate.
- Acknowledgement of sources: reviewers should identify relevant published work not cited and alert the editor to substantial similarity or overlap with other work.
- Conflicts of interest: reviewers must decline manuscripts in which they have competitive, collaborative or other relationships with the authors or institutions.
- Use of information: privileged information or ideas obtained through review must not be used for personal advantage.
4. Duties of the Publisher
- Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta guarantees the editorial independence of the journal.
- The publisher supports the editors in handling ethical complaints and in publishing corrections, expressions of concern and retractions.
- The publisher ensures the long-term preservation of published content (see Archiving Policy) and the accessibility of the journal website.
5. Handling of Misconduct and Sanctions
Allegations of misconduct are handled confidentially and fairly according to COPE flowcharts. Authors are always given an opportunity to respond. Depending on the severity, the following sanctions will be applied:
| Stage | Type of misconduct | Sanction |
| Before publication | Minor (e.g., inadequate citation, limited text overlap) | Manuscript returned for correction |
| Before publication | Serious (plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, duplicate submission) | Immediate rejection; institution may be notified |
| After publication | Honest error affecting part of the article | Correction (corrigendum/erratum) |
| After publication | Serious misconduct or unreliable results | Retraction with a public notice linked to the article |
| Any stage | Serious or repeated misconduct | Ban on submissions to JSD for [3] years; notification of institution and funder |
Important: JSD reserves the right to share information about proven misconduct with the authors' institutions, funding agencies and other journals where necessary to protect the scholarly record.
6. Reporting Concerns
Anyone who suspects unethical conduct related to a manuscript or published article is encouraged to contact the Editor-in-Chief confidentially at jsd@uny.ac.id, providing specific evidence. The identity of the person reporting will be protected.
