Generative AI Policy

JSD follows COPE's position on authorship and AI tools. Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot) may be used only to improve the language and readability of a manuscript, under human oversight and with full disclosure.

Permitted and Prohibited Uses (Authors)

Permitted (must be declared) Not permitted
Improving grammar, wording and readability Listing AI as an author or co-author
Translating the authors' own text, followed by careful checking Generating or altering research data, results or statistics
Formatting references that the authors have verified Creating or manipulating images and figures (unless it is part of the research method)
Summarising the authors' own text for an abstract draft, then rewriting Fabricating, inventing or "hallucinating" references
— Writing substantial parts of the manuscript without critical human revision

Disclosure

Any use of AI in writing must be disclosed in the "Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies" section, naming the tool and its purpose, for example:

"During the preparation of this work, the authors used [Tool] in order to improve language and readability. After using this tool, the authors reviewed and edited the content as needed and take full responsibility for the content of the publication."

Basic spelling and grammar checkers (e.g., built-in Word tools) need not be declared. When AI is part of the research itself (e.g., machine-learning models or AI-based image analysis), it must be described in detail in the Methods section.

Responsibility

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality and integrity of the entire manuscript, including any AI-assisted text, and must verify all facts and references.

Reviewers and Editors

  • Manuscripts and review reports are confidential and must not be uploaded to generative AI tools, as this may breach confidentiality, data protection and authors' rights.
  • AI must not be used to write review reports or editorial decisions; the scientific evaluation must be made by the reviewer or editor.
  • Reviewers may use AI only to improve the language of their own report, without entering any manuscript content.

Please note: Undisclosed or inappropriate use of AI is treated as research misconduct and may lead to rejection, correction or retraction.
