Permissions

Policy

Authors are responsible for getting permission to reuse material that they do not own, and for stating its source. When they submit, authors warrant that the work is free of third-party rights and that any permissions needed have been obtained. See Copyright & License.

Material that needs permission

  • Figures, tables, photographs, drawings, and illustrations from other sources, unless they are under an open licence that allows the reuse.
  • Long quotations and large parts of text.
  • Photographs, recordings, or details that identify a person, such as a student or a worker. Consent for publication is needed. See the Ethical Clearance Statement.
  • Material that belongs to a school, a training centre, or a company, such as logos, technical drawings, standards, manuals, or images of facilities.

What authors must do

  • Obtain the permission in writing before submission, and keep it. The editors may ask to see it.
  • State the source and the licence or the permission in the caption, for example “Reproduced with permission from …”.
  • Make sure the permission covers open-access publication and reuse under the licence of the article. If it does not, say so in the caption and mark the material as excluded from the licence.
  • Leave out material for which permission cannot be obtained, and use your own material or material under an open licence instead.

Reusing material from this journal

Articles can be shared under the terms of the licence stated on each article and in the Copyright & License policy, with attribution. Third-party material in an article may have different terms, as stated in its caption.
