Editorial Decisions & Revision

Policy

Decisions are made by the editors on the basis of the reviews and the scholarly quality of the manuscript, and the importance and the originality of the work. They are not affected by the identity or standing of the authors, or by any payment. See the Peer Review Process and Editorial Procedures.

Possible decisions

Accept without revision The manuscript is accepted as submitted and goes to production.
Minor revision The manuscript is accepted if the authors make small changes. The editors check the changes.
Major revision The manuscript needs substantial changes, and is usually sent to the reviewers again.
Reject The manuscript is not suitable for publication in the journal.

Revising a manuscript

  • Make the changes in the revised file and, with a response letter, answer each point of the editor and the reviewers.
  • If you disagree with a comment, explain why with reasons and evidence.
  • Keep the revised file anonymous, as for the first submission.
  • Upload the revision through the website, in the same submission.

After acceptance

Accepted manuscripts go to copyediting, typesetting, and proofreading before publication. Authors are asked to check the proofs. Changes at this stage are limited to errors.

If you disagree with a decision

See Editorial Appeals.
