AI in Peer Review

Policy

Peer review depends on human expertise and judgement and on confidentiality. Reviewers and editors must not put manuscripts into generative AI tools. See Generative AI Policy for the use of AI by authors.

Reviewers

  • Do not upload the manuscript, or any part of it, or the review comments to an AI tool, because this could break confidentiality and the rights of the authors.
  • Do not use AI to produce the assessment. The review must be your own judgement, and you are responsible for it.
  • Basic tools for checking the spelling and grammar of your own review text, which do not take in the manuscript, do not need to be declared.

Editors

  • Do not upload manuscripts, reviews, or decision letters to AI tools.
  • Do not use AI to make or to replace an editorial decision.
  • Use of tools for administrative work that does not involve confidential content is allowed.

Authors

Authors who use AI in the work follow the Generative AI Policy. They must not use AI to write responses that hide the changes made in a revision.

If a breach is suspected

The editors may ask for an explanation, remove the reviewer, and discard the review. See Peer Review Confidentiality and Publication Ethics.
