Abstract

This study investigates the Bintang Maratur motif of Ulos, a traditional Batak Toba textile from North Sumatra, Indonesia, by combining cultural semiotics with complex mathematical analysis using analytic functions. Culturally analyzed via Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic semiotic framework (sign, object, interpretant), the motif symbolizes cosmic order, guidance, and familial harmony. Concurrently, its geometric geometry is rigorously modeled using complex exponential functions, starlike analytic functions, Fourier series expansions, and conformal mappings. Our mathematical formulation reconstructs the eight-pointed star geometry with dimensional deviations below 2%. The results establish that traditional Batak weaving embodies sophisticated geometric logic, bridging indigenous heritage, digital textile modeling, and STEM education.
