AI Policy
1. Purpose and scope
Jurnal Inovasi Teknologi Pendidikan (JITP) recognises that generative AI tools, such as large language models, chatbots, and image generators, can support research and writing. These tools cannot replace the intellectual contribution, judgement, originality, and accountability of researchers, reviewers, and editors. This policy applies to authors, reviewers, and editors, follows COPE guidance on authorship and AI tools, and should be read with our Publication Ethics and Authorship policies.
2. Authors
Permitted, with verification and disclosure:
- language editing, grammar and spelling correction, and readability improvement;
- translation of a manuscript into English, provided the authors check the accuracy of the translation;
- organising references and formatting citations;
- similarity checking before submission;
- data processing, analysis, and visualisation, provided the authors verify all outputs and describe the methods used.
Not permitted:
- using AI to generate the intellectual substance of a manuscript, such as the research problem and hypotheses, the interpretation of results, the discussion, or the conclusions;
- using AI to fabricate, falsify, or manipulate data, images, results, or evidence;
- including references or citations that were generated by AI or that the authors have not checked against the original sources;
- listing an AI tool as an author or co-author. AI cannot take responsibility for scholarly work.
Disclosure. Authors who used generative AI in preparing the manuscript must include a statement before the References, naming the tool, its version, the date accessed, and the purpose. For example: “The generative AI tool [name, version] was accessed on [date] to assist with [language editing/translation/...]. The authors reviewed and edited all output and take full responsibility for the content.” [Disclosure is not needed for basic spelling and grammar checkers.] If no AI was used, the authors may state this in the Declarations.
AI as a subject or method of research. JITP publishes research in which AI-based tools are developed, tested, or used as learning media, interventions, or analysis methods. This is part of the research design, not writing assistance. The Methods section must describe the tool, its version, relevant settings or prompts, how outputs were validated, and any privacy and ethical safeguards. The disclosure statement above is required in addition when AI also helped prepare the manuscript.
Responsibility. Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the entire manuscript, including any part produced with AI help. Generative AI tools should not be cited as sources of facts. Cite the original sources.
3. Reviewers
Reviewers must not use generative AI tools in reviewing a manuscript. This includes uploading a manuscript or any part of it to such tools, and using them to analyse the manuscript or to write or summarise a review report. Manuscripts are confidential, and review reports must reflect the reviewer’s own expert judgement. A reviewer who suspects undisclosed AI use in a manuscript should tell the editor. Reviewers are informed of this rule in the review invitation and the review form.
4. Editors
- Editors must not upload submitted manuscripts or other confidential material to public generative AI tools.
- Editors must not use AI to assess manuscripts or to make or justify editorial decisions. Decisions are made by people.
- Any use of AI by editors in their editorial work, which is limited to language editing of their own correspondence and does not include confidential content, must be disclosed to the Editor-in-Chief.
- Editors check authors’ AI disclosures during the initial editorial evaluation.
5. Tools used by the journal
The journal may use automated tools, for example for similarity checking, reference or metadata checks, and image screening. Editors review the results and use them as information only. They do not decide the outcome by themselves.
6. Breaches
Undisclosed or inappropriate AI use is handled under the journal’s Allegation of Research Misconduct and Correction, Withdrawal, and Retraction policies. Before publication, this may lead to revision or rejection of the manuscript. After publication, it may lead to a correction, an expression of concern, or a retraction. When a reviewer or an editor breaches this policy, the affected review or decision may be set aside and reassessed, and serious or repeated breaches may result in removal from reviewing or editorial duties.
7. Review of this policy
This policy is reviewed periodically as AI technology and publishing standards develop. Questions can be sent to the editorial office at teknodik@uny.ac.id.
