Editorial Policies and Publication Ethics
Standards
Journal of Economics and Education (JEP) is a national, open-access, peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the Department of Economics Education, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The journal provides an academic platform for theoretical and empirical research in economics, education, economics education, and related fields.
JEP is committed to academic quality, publication ethics, editorial independence, and transparency. Editorial decisions are based on originality, scholarly contribution, methodological rigor, relevance to the journal's scope, and ethical integrity.
Policy Overview

01 Peer Review Policy
All manuscripts submitted to JEP undergo an initial editorial screening to assess their suitability for the journal's focus and scope, originality, academic quality, and compliance with submission requirements.
Manuscripts that pass the initial screening are evaluated through a double-blind peer review process, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are concealed from each other to support independent and impartial evaluation.
Qualified reviewers assess originality, theoretical foundation, research design, methodological appropriateness, data analysis, interpretation of findings, scholarly contribution, and clarity of presentation.
Based on reviewer reports and editorial assessment, a manuscript may be accepted, accepted subject to minor revisions, returned for major revisions, or rejected. The editor makes the final publication decision. Revisions do not guarantee acceptance, and further review may be required.
02 Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement
JEP is committed to maintaining the integrity of scholarly publishing. Its publication ethics policy is informed by the principles and best practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher share responsibility for upholding honesty, transparency, fairness, confidentiality, and accountability throughout the publication process.
The journal does not tolerate plagiarism, data fabrication, data falsification, duplicate publication, inappropriate authorship, citation manipulation, or other forms of research and publication misconduct.
Allegations of misconduct are assessed carefully and fairly. The journal may request clarification, supporting documentation, or an institutional investigation. Appropriate actions may include rejection, correction, retraction, or other measures proportionate to the violation and consistent with applicable publication ethics guidance.
04 Responsibilities of Editors
Editors are responsible for managing the editorial process professionally, fairly, and independently. They must:
- Evaluate manuscripts based on scholarly merit, originality, relevance, and methodological quality.
- Ensure that decisions are not influenced by authors' nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, institutional affiliation, political views, or personal relationships.
- Maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and editorial communications.
- Select qualified reviewers with appropriate expertise.
- Identify and manage potential conflicts of interest.
- Address allegations of research misconduct and publication ethics violations appropriately.
- Communicate editorial decisions clearly and provide constructive feedback where appropriate.
- Ensure that accepted manuscripts meet the journal's academic, ethical, and technical requirements.
05 Responsibilities of Reviewers
Reviewers play an important role in maintaining the quality and credibility of JEP. Reviewers are expected to:
- Accept review invitations only when they have appropriate expertise and sufficient time.
- Declare potential conflicts of interest and decline assignments when impartiality may be compromised.
- Evaluate manuscripts objectively, fairly, and professionally.
- Provide constructive comments supported by clear academic reasoning.
- Identify relevant literature that has not been adequately acknowledged.
- Inform the editor of suspected plagiarism, data inconsistencies, or other ethical concerns.
- Maintain manuscript confidentiality and refrain from using unpublished information for personal advantage.
- Complete reviews within the agreed timeframe or inform the editor if an extension is needed.
06 Plagiarism and Similarity Screening
JEP is committed to preventing plagiarism and inappropriate duplication of published work. Submitted manuscripts may be screened using similarity-checking software as part of the editorial process.
Similarity reports are assessed contextually by the editorial team. A similarity score alone does not determine whether plagiarism has occurred; the nature, source, and context of matching text are also considered.
Manuscripts containing unattributed material, substantial inappropriate overlap, or other forms of plagiarism may be returned for clarification or rejected. Published articles may be subject to correction or retraction if serious violations are identified after publication.
Authors are responsible for ensuring that quotations, paraphrases, data, figures, tables, and other borrowed materials are appropriately acknowledged and used in accordance with applicable copyright requirements.
07 Conflict of Interest
Authors, reviewers, and editors must disclose financial, professional, institutional, personal, or other relationships that could influence, or reasonably be perceived to influence, their work or decisions.
Editors will take appropriate measures to manage conflicts of interest, including assigning an alternative editor or reviewer when necessary. Disclosed conflicts are evaluated in context and do not automatically result in rejection.
08 Editorial Independence and Publication Decisions
Editorial decisions are based on the quality, originality, relevance, and integrity of submitted manuscripts. Decisions are not determined by authors' institutional affiliations, academic positions, personal characteristics, or potential commercial interests.
The editor retains responsibility for the final decision to accept or reject a manuscript, taking into account reviewer recommendations, editorial assessment, and the journal's publication standards. A positive reviewer recommendation does not automatically guarantee acceptance.
09 Confidentiality
All manuscripts submitted to JEP are treated as confidential documents. Editors, reviewers, and other individuals involved in the editorial process must not disclose manuscript content or information about editorial deliberations to unauthorized parties.
Confidential information obtained through peer review must not be used for personal, professional, or commercial advantage. Exceptions may apply when disclosure is necessary to investigate suspected misconduct or is required by applicable law or legitimate institutional procedures.
10 Corrections and Retractions
JEP is committed to preserving the accuracy and reliability of the scholarly record.
Corrections may be issued when errors affect the accuracy or interpretation of a published article but do not invalidate its principal findings.
Retraction may be considered when compelling evidence of serious errors, fabricated or falsified data, plagiarism, duplicate publication, or other major violations undermines the reliability or integrity of a publication.
Decisions concerning corrections and retractions are made following an appropriate assessment of the available evidence. Notices will explain the reasons for the action as clearly as possible, while respecting confidentiality and applicable ethical requirements.
11 Appeals and Complaints
Authors may appeal editorial decisions by submitting a reasoned explanation supported by relevant evidence. Appeals should identify specific factual errors, methodological misunderstandings, or procedural concerns related to the decision.
Complaints regarding editorial conduct, peer review, authorship, research integrity, or publication ethics will be handled fairly, confidentially, and impartially by the appropriate editorial authority.
The journal may seek additional information or independent advice when necessary. The outcome of an appeal or complaint will be communicated to the relevant parties.
12 Open Access Policy
JEP provides open access to its published scholarly content in accordance with the journal's stated open access policy. The journal supports the dissemination of research findings to the academic community and the wider public.
Copyright, licensing, and permitted reuse of published articles are governed by the terms specified on the journal's website. Authors and readers should consult the journal's copyright and licensing statements for the applicable conditions.
13 Research Ethics
Research involving human participants, personal information, or other ethically sensitive materials must comply with applicable ethical standards and institutional requirements.
Authors must provide information about ethical approval, informed consent, participant protection, and data confidentiality when relevant to the research. The editorial team may request additional documentation when necessary to verify compliance.
Research findings must be reported honestly and transparently. Data fabrication, falsification, selective misrepresentation, and other practices that undermine research integrity are unacceptable.
14 Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence
Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and scholarly validity of their manuscripts. Artificial intelligence tools cannot be listed as authors.
Authors must disclose the use of generative AI tools when required by the journal's instructions, particularly when such tools materially contribute to manuscript content, data analysis, or other scholarly work. AI-assisted content must be carefully verified by the authors.
AI tools must not be used to fabricate data, generate misleading references, misrepresent research findings, or compromise confidential information. The use of AI does not exempt authors from complying with research ethics, copyright requirements, and publication standards.
15 Digital Preservation and Archiving
JEP aims to preserve its published content and support continued access to scholarly articles. Information about digital preservation arrangements, repository participation, and archiving services will be provided on the journal's website in accordance with the services actually used by the journal.
16 Publication Fee Policy
Information regarding article processing charges, submission fees, and other publication-related costs, if applicable, is provided on the journal's website. Any applicable fees and payment conditions should be communicated transparently to authors.
Editorial decisions are based on academic and ethical considerations and must not be influenced by the payment or non-payment of publication fees, except where a clearly stated administrative policy applies.
17 Policy Review
These editorial policies may be reviewed and updated periodically to reflect developments in scholarly publishing, research ethics, and the journal's editorial practices. Revisions will be communicated through the journal's official website.
