Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study was to develop and examine a smartphone application to promote physical activity, based on challenges. The research method adopted the R&D method with Simons' stepwise approach, namely (a) selecting the determinants, (b) determining the design of the app content, (c) developing the app and (d) testing the app in terms of usability, acceptability and feasibility. The participants of this study totalled 35 (15 girls, 20 boys) high school adolescents. Snowball and convenience sampling techniques were used to determine the research participants. Data collection used observation, interviews, FGDs and documentation. Qualitative data analysis, using the help of qualitative data analysis software Atlas.Ti version 24. The result, an application called Merdeka Bergerak to promote physical activity was developed with a focus on education and knowledge, social environment and facilities, technology, physical health and psychology. In testing and evaluation, problems were detected such as application display, notification problems, physical activity learning videos could not be played and participants were not familiar with the use of diaries. In conclusion, the application of a phased, participant-centered approach resulted in a new app that was positively evaluated by students and supports active lifestyle habits.
