Teachers as society -members
try to provide social supports as an attempt to
overcome problems resulting from the earthquake. Social supports as
an important
part of the recovery process have positive effects on society members. This study
revealed how teachers helped the recovery process after-the earthquake in Bantul
Regency, Yogyakarta Special Territory. The
study employed the qualitative
approach. The
data were collected through in~depth interviews, observations, and
documents. The data were analyzed by using the descriptive and narrative
techniques. In the post-earthquake situation, teachers established resilience to
recover their own life spirit and their students'. It was not easy for them to do so
because most
of them experienced a traumatic situation during the earthquake.
They tried to
apply resilience strategies in the recovery process. For them,
difficulties that the students faced were not only damaged
and destroyed school
bUildings which were not conducive for learning. For them, the earthquake was a
learning experience to
understand more about life. They realized their limitation as
God's creatures, social creatures,
and individual creatures. In the recovery process,
teachers, especially those
in Pleret District, expressed their creatiVity in a rational
and positive attitude towards the earthquake by joining a variety of spiritual-and
social activities. They accompanied the students in difficult situations. They stated
that they could not realize the helping process to the maximum due to their own
internal problems. They stated that the earthquake -managed to improve their
understanding
of the meaning of life and was the beginning of a process of
learning the earthquake as natural event that might happen any time in Indonesia
