Focus and scope

SOCIA publishes work across the social sciences and social studies education — sociology and anthropology, geography, history, political science and governance, economics and development, social studies curriculum and pedagogy, and the social dimensions of culture, religion, environment, and technology.

The journal gives particular attention to studies grounded in Indonesian and Southeast Asian contexts, while remaining open to research from any setting that speaks to a broader scholarly conversation. The full statement is on the Focus and Scope page.

History

SOCIA was founded in 2000 by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, as a forum for research in the social sciences, and every issue it has published remains available in the archives.

The journal began in print under ISSN 1829-5797 and later moved to online publication under e-ISSN 2549-9475, adopting Open Journal Systems for the full editorial workflow, double-anonymous peer review, DOI registration with Crossref, and immediate open access.

Open access and copyright

Every article is freely available in full text from the moment of publication, without subscription, registration, or payment.

Copyright belongs to the authors. Articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International Licence (CC BY-SA 4.0), which allows anyone to share and adapt the work, including commercially, provided the author and the original publication are credited and any derivative work carries the same licence. Archiving

Every issue the journal has published remains available in full text through the archives. The journal is hosted and maintained by Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, which provides the platform, regular backups, and technical continuity. Articles are not removed after publication; where a correction is needed, a notice is published and stays permanently linked to the original article.

The journal also participates in the LOCKSS and the PKP Preservation Network, which create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permit those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for the purposes of preservation and restoration. Both are dark archives: their copies are not browsed directly by readers, but are held ready so that the content can be restored if this website ever becomes unavailable.

Publisher and sponsorship

SOCIA is published and funded by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, which provides the editorial office, the publishing platform, and technical support. The journal carries no advertising and accepts no commercial sponsorship, and editorial decisions are made independently of the publisher and of any funding body. Any charge applied to authors is stated on the Author Fees page.
