Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance participants’ competencies in sustainable electrical project management through the implementation of an automatic Solar-Powered Street Lighting (SPSL) system. The program integrated the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Project-Based Learning (PjBL) approaches, enabling participants to acquire not only conceptual knowledge but also hands-on experience in solving real-world engineering problems through project implementation. The activities consisted of needs assessment, training on electrical safety, basic electrical installation, photovoltaic (PV) system fundamentals, automatic street lighting control systems, and electrical project management, followed by system design, installation, testing, and evaluation. The results demonstrated that participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the planning, implementation, and evaluation stages of renewable energy-based electrical projects. The implemented automatic SPSL system operated as designed, effectively utilizing solar energy while improving energy efficiency through an automatic lighting control mechanism based on a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) sensor. In addition to delivering a functional lighting system that benefits the local community, the program enhanced participants’ collaboration, problem-solving, and project management skills. These findings indicate that integrating the PBL and PjBL models is an effective mentoring approach for strengthening competencies in electrical project management while promoting the adoption of sustainable energy technologies in the community.
