Menurut Centers of Disease Control and Prevention / CDC (2012), Guillain Barre Syndrom (GBS) adalah penyakit langka di mana sistem kekebalan seseorang menyerang sistem syaraf tepi dan menyebabkan kelemahan otot bahkan apabila parah bisa terjadi kelumpuhan. Hal ini terjadi karena susunan syaraf tepi yang menghubungkan otak dan sumsum belakang dengan seluruh bagian tubuh kita rusak. Kerusakan sistem syaraf tepi menyebabkan sistem ini sulit menghantarkan rangsang sehingga ada penurunan respon sistem otot terhadap kerja sistem syaraf.
