Letusan Gunung Merapi yang terjadi pada tahun 2010 menurut catatan sejarah tergolong letusan yang besar. Hal ini diindikasikan dari jumlah material vulkanik yang telah dilontarkannya ke luar perut gunung berupa campuran abu, batu, pasir dan kerikil. Jumlah material vulkanik yang dikeluarkan selama proses erupsi mencapai diperkirakan mencapai lebih dari 140 juta m3.
