Publication Ethics
HUMANIKA is committed to academic integrity, responsible research, transparent editorial practices, and ethical scholarly publishing. These principles guide authors, reviewers, editors, and other contributors throughout the publication process.
Our Ethical Publishing Principles
Trustworthy scholarly publishing depends on the originality of research, the credibility of research findings, transparency in professional relationships, and responsible use of emerging technologies.
HUMANIKA establishes the following four policies to guide ethical conduct, address potential violations, and protect the integrity of the scholarly record. Authors, reviewers, and editors are expected to understand and comply with the relevant requirements.
Plagiarism Policy
HUMANIKA maintains a strict policy against plagiarism and other forms of publication misconduct. Submitted manuscripts must present original scholarly work, acknowledge sources appropriately, and comply with academic standards of attribution.
Plagiarism and related violations may include:
- Copying words, ideas, data, or findings without appropriate acknowledgement.
- Inadequate paraphrasing or unattributed translation.
- Self-plagiarism and duplicate or redundant publication.
- Improper use of tables, figures, and other materials.
Manuscripts undergo similarity screening. Editorial decisions consider the similarity report, sources of overlapping text, citation practices, and the context of the material rather than relying on a similarity percentage alone.
Allegations of Research Misconduct
HUMANIKA is committed to maintaining research integrity. Allegations of research misconduct are assessed fairly, confidentially, and on the basis of available evidence.
Potential forms of misconduct include:
- Fabrication or falsification of research data.
- Plagiarism and duplicate publication.
- Inappropriate authorship or undisclosed conflicts of interest.
- Citation manipulation, peer-review manipulation, or violations of research ethics.
Concerns may be reported to the editorial office with a clear description and supporting evidence. Depending on the findings, editorial actions may include requesting corrections, rejecting a manuscript, issuing an expression of concern, retracting an article, or referring a case to the relevant institution.
Conflict of Interest
A conflict of interest arises when financial, personal, professional, institutional, or other interests could influence, or reasonably be perceived to influence, research activities or editorial decisions.
HUMANIKA requires the following responsibilities:
- Authors must disclose relevant financial and non-financial interests.
- Funding sources and the funder's role must be reported transparently.
- Reviewers must decline or disclose assignments when impartiality may be compromised.
- Editors must ensure independent handling of manuscripts involving competing interests.
When no relevant conflict exists, authors should provide an appropriate declaration. Undisclosed conflicts may result in further assessment and editorial action, including correction or retraction where warranted.
Generative AI Policy
HUMANIKA recognises that generative artificial intelligence can support research and academic writing when used responsibly. However, AI must not replace human critical thinking, scholarly judgement, or original intellectual contributions.
The policy emphasises the following principles:
- Authors remain responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of their manuscripts.
- Substantive AI use must be disclosed in accordance with the journal's requirements.
- AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.
- AI-generated information and references must be carefully verified.
- Confidential manuscripts and research data must be protected.
The policy also establishes specific restrictions on the use of generative AI by reviewers and editors, as well as on AI-generated or materially altered figures, images, and other visual materials.
A Shared Commitment to Research Integrity
These four policies work together to protect the originality of manuscripts, ensure responsible research practices, promote transparency in scholarly relationships, and support accountability in the use of emerging technologies.
Authors, reviewers, and editors are expected to follow the applicable policies and cooperate with reasonable editorial inquiries. HUMANIKA seeks to address ethical concerns fairly, transparently, and proportionately, with the aim of preserving trust in academic publishing.
Upholding Ethical Scholarly Publishing
Academic integrity is a shared responsibility. Through clear ethical standards and accountable editorial practices, HUMANIKA is committed to maintaining the quality, transparency, and credibility of scholarly communication.
