Focus and Scope

Aims and Scope

Journal of Social Studies (JSS) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary scholarship in social studies and related social science fields. The journal provides a platform for high-quality research exploring the relationships among society, culture, politics, and education, particularly in the context of citizenship, democracy, and social transformation.

JSS prioritises research that bridges global theoretical perspectives with empirical realities in Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and other regions of the Global South. The journal encourages studies that critically examine civic life, democratic participation, social justice, and the role of education in shaping socially responsible and informed citizens.

The journal publishes original research articles, theoretical papers, and critical reviews employing qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, or interdisciplinary approaches. Topics covered include citizenship and civic education, social studies pedagogy, governance and public participation, multiculturalism and diversity, digital citizenship, and socio-cultural transformation.

By promoting context-sensitive scholarship and international academic dialogue, JSS seeks to advance social studies research and strengthen global understanding of citizenship, governance, and social change in emerging societies.

Unique Positioning Statement

Journal of Social Studies (JSS) positions itself as a specialised academic platform focusing on social studies scholarship from the perspective of the Global South, with particular attention to Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Unlike general social science journals, JSS integrates perspectives from social science disciplines and social studies education, emphasising how knowledge about society, politics, culture, and citizenship is constructed, taught, and practised in developing societies.

The journal highlights contextual, interdisciplinary, and critical analyses that connect global theoretical debates with local empirical realities. By amplifying scholarly voices from regions that are often underrepresented in international academic publishing, JSS contributes to diversifying global knowledge production in the fields of citizenship, democracy, and social transformation.

Through this positioning, JSS aims to become a leading reference for scholars interested in citizenship studies, social studies education, and democratic development in emerging societies, particularly across Southeast Asia and the broader Global South.
