Editorial Policies

Focus and Scope

Criteria for publication in Journal of Science Education Research are novelty, quality, and general interest in experimental and theoretical basic sciences and science education. Articles are welcome that deal with theoretical analyses, meta-analysis reviews, and results of research or empirical studies from all aspects of sciences and science education including chemistry, physics, biology, and natural science. Reports on new methodologies and comprehensive assessments of existing ones, as well as applications to new types of problems are especially welcome. Experimental papers are expected to be brought into relation with theory, and theoretical papers should be connected to present or future experiments. Manuscripts that apply routine use or minor extensions or modifications of established and/or published experimental and theoretical methodologies are appropriate if they report novel results for an important problem of high interest and/or if they provide significant new insights.

Peer Review Process

All submitted manuscripts are evaluated by the editorial staff. The manuscripts that evaluated by editors to be inappropriate to journal criteria are rejected promptly without external review. Manuscripts evaluated as potential interest to our readership are sent to double blind reviewers. The editors then make a decision based on the reviewer’s recommendation from among several possibilities: rejected, require major revision, need minor revision, or accepted.

Journal of Science Education Research (JSER) is an open access peer reviewed research journal on basic sciences area that is published by Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta. JSER welcomes and acknowledges high quality theoretical and empirical original research papers, case studies, conceptual framework, analytical and simulation models, technical note about education at any topic from researchers, academicians, professional, practitioners and students from all over the world. Procedure to Avoid Plagiarism

After we receive the articles, we send it to the admin who are responsible for Turnitin account that our university has. He will do the scanning process. From the result of scanning, if we do not find any plagiarism, we will forward the articles to the editor. However, if we find that there is a plagiarism, there will be two actions. First, if the plagiarism is less than 40%, we recommend the writer to revise his/her paper/article. Second, if it is more than 40%, we will reject the papers/articles

Author Guidelines

  1. Manuscript accepted is written in standard Indonesian language or English
  2. The length of the manuscript is approximately 15 pages (or approximately 7000 words), written in A4 paper format, margins: top 3; left 3; right 2; bottom 2, two columns (except for abstract, figure or table whose size cannot be reduced due to its readability), justified, single-spaced.
  3. Manuscript comprises five main headings: Pendahuluan (Introduction); Metode Penelitian (Research Method); Hasil dan Pembahasan (Findings and Discussion); Simpulan dan Saran (Conclusions and Suggestions); Daftar Pustaka (References).
  4. The title of the manuscript must be as brief as possible, and must represent the content of the manuscript.
  5. Authors’ names are written below the tittle, followed by authors’ affiliation and e-mail address.
  6. Abstract is written in two languages: Indonesian and English, as a representation of the manuscript. The abstract should not exceed 250 words for each language format, written narratively comprising aims/objectives, method, and findings of the research/article.
  7. Keywords: words or phrases which are important, specific, or representative to the article.
  8. APA style is used as a reference in citation, references, and writing format.
  9. The references of the article are in the form of journals and non-journals which are published in the last 10 years.
  10. The manuscript should be written in the following TEMPLATE (download).
  11. The manuscript must be in *.doc or *.rtf , and sent to the journal system via online submission by creating account in this Open Journal System (OJS)
  12. All Author(s)' names and identity (es) must be completely embedded in the form filled in by the corresponding author: email; affiliation; and each author's short biography (in the column of 'Bio Statement'). [If the manuscript is written by two or more authors, please click 'Add Author' in the 3rd step of 'ENTER METADATA' in the submission process and then enter each author's data.]
  13. Authors' biography (in the column of Bio Statement) is written in the form of narration, including author's full name, place and date of birth, educational qualification/information started from bachelor degree (S-1) until the latest educational degree, the affiliation in which the author is currently working, phone number, and email address.
  14. All correspondences, information and decisions for the submitted manuscripts are conducted through email written in the manuscript and/or the emails used for the submission. The status of the manuscript can be checked in the OJS by logging in to the journal.

  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 11-point font; TNR; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

Section A: Publication and authorship 

  1. All submitted papers are subject to strict peer-review process by at least two international reviewers that are experts in the area of the particular paper.
  2. Review process are blind peer review.
  3. The factors that are taken into account in review are relevance, soundness, significance, originality, readability and language.
  4. The possible decisions include acceptance, acceptance with revisions, or rejection.
  5. If authors are encouraged to revise and resubmit a submission, there is no guarantee that the revised submission will be accepted.
  6. Rejected articles will not be re-reviewed.
  7. The paper acceptance is constrained by such legal requirements as shall then be in force regarding libel, copyright infringement and plagiarism.
  8. No research can be included in more than one publication. 

Section B: Authors’ responsibilities

  1. Authors must certify that their manuscripts are their original work.
  2. Authors must certify that the manuscript has not previously been published elsewhere.
  3. Authors must certify that the manuscript is not currently being considered for publication elsewhere. 
  4. Authors must participate in the peer review process. 
  5. Authors are obliged to provide retractions or corrections of mistakes.
  6. All Authors mentioned in the paper must have significantly contributed to the research.
  7. Authors must state that all data in the paper are real and authentic.
  8. Authors must notify the Editors of any conflicts of interest.
  9. Authors must identify all sources used in the creation of their manuscript.
  10. Authors must report any errors they discover in their published paper to the Editors. 

Section C: Reviewers’ responsibilities

  1. Reviewers should keep all information regarding papers confidential and treat them as privileged information. 
  2. Reviews should be conducted objectively, with no personal criticism of the author
  3. Reviewers should express their views clearly with supporting arguments
  4. Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors.
  5. Reviewers should also call to the Editor in Chief’s attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.
  6. Reviewers should not review manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers. 

Section D: Editors’ responsibilities

  1. Editors have complete responsibility and authority to reject/accept an article.
  2. Editors are responsible for the contents and overall quality of the publication.
  3. Editors should always consider the needs of the authors and the readers when attempting to improve the publication.
  4. Editors should guarantee the quality of the papers and the integrity of the academic record.
  5. Editors should publish errata pages or make corrections when needed.
  6. Editors should have a clear picture of a research’s funding sources.
  7. Editors should base their decisions solely one the papers’ importance, originality, clarity and relevance to publication’s scope.
  8. Editors should not reverse their decisions nor overturn the ones of previous editors without serious reason. 
  9. Editors should preserve the anonymity of reviewers. 
  10. Editors should ensure that all research material they publish conforms to internationally accepted ethical guidelines.
  11. Editors should only accept a paper when reasonably certain.
  12. Editors should act if they suspect misconduct, whether a paper is published or unpublished, and make all reasonable attempts to persist in obtaining a resolution to the problem.
  13. Editors should not reject papers based on suspicions, they should have proof of misconduct.
  14. Editors should not allow any conflicts of interest between staff, authors, reviewers and board members.
