Children’s life is dominated by activities for having fun, playing, and singing; and learning can also be done in these ways. Traditional songs, as part of children’s literatures, which is loaded with values, must be taught to children. The study is aimed at revealing the perceptions, learning materials and strategies, and competencies of teachers toward traditional songs. The study had the participation of 38 elementary-school teachers taking a post-graduate study on-line by using questionnaires, interviews, and scores of exams in singing traditional songs. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed by condensation and inference drawing. Result results show that teachers like, can sing traditional songs, even songs from various ethnic cultures from different regions in Indonesia, and teach them to elementary-school children at school. They have awareness of the importance of traditional songs in the attempts to build characters, love and internalize local cultural values, and, most primarily, give delightful entertainments to school children. Learning is done by repetitive singing practice so that children can easily memorize songs and it gives children various useful experiences related to the social cultural life system of the society owner of the songs. Teachers are agreed that traditional songs must be continually taught to elementary-school students continuously as an effort to to preserve them.
