EXPLORATION OF WELT POCKET CONSTRUCTION IN MEN’S APPAREL USING PARANG BATIK FABRIC

Abstract

This study aims to develop an instructional medium in the form of a tutorial video on the construction of welt pockets in men’s apparel using batik parang fabric. The research was motivated by the need of fashion education students to master precise pocket-making techniques, particularly when working with diagonally patterned fabrics such as the parang motif. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the 4D development model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). Research instruments consisted of questionnaires validated by three experts using Aiken’s V, yielding average scores of 0.94 for the material aspect (high category) and 0.769 for the media aspect (moderate category), confirming their validity. The final product, a learning video, was validated by subject-matter and media experts, and subsequently tested in limited and wider trials. Results showed that the limited trial with 15 students achieved an average score of 54.67 (good category), while the wider trial with 38 students improved to 70.18 (very good category). These findings indicate that revisions, including explanatory text and audio enhancements, successfully improved the effectiveness of the media. Overall, the developed video is feasible, practical, and effective for vocational fashion education while also contributing to the preservation of batik culture as part of modern menswear identity.
