Indonesia’s democratic trajectory, once celebrated as a success story in post-authoritarian Southeast Asia, is now at a critical crossroads. While electoral processes remain functional, recent political developments indicate a troubling trend of democratic backsliding. This is characterized by the centralization of power, the erosion of checks and balances, and the restriction of civil liberties. The interaction among entrenched political elites, oligarchic interests, military influence in civilian governance, and the strategic use of law to consolidate authority raises urgent questions about the resilience of Indonesia’s democratic institutions. This journal issue invites scholarly contributions that critically examine the tensions between democratic ideals and authoritarian tendencies, the role of civil society in protecting political freedoms, and the broader implications of Indonesia’s democratic dynamics for regional and global governance.
