Vernacular typography of Pecel Lele banners as a medium of expression in contemporary art
Abstract
This research aims to examine the phenomenon of using vernacular typography of Lamongan pecel lele banners in various contemporary art works through three main focuses: its role as artistic inspiration, the meanings conveyed, and the methods of conveying those meanings. This is a descriptive qualitative study involving subjects such as Sukaku Desain, Kamengski, Queen Lekha Choppers, and Kolektif Angeljodo. The objects include graduation banners with a pecel lele theme, fashion collections, an exhibition stand at Kustomfest 2023, and the installation titled Homeground. Data collection techniques involve interviews and document studies, while data validity is tested using the Miles and Huberman model through source and technique triangulation. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal that the use of this vernacular typography inspires various artworks through pastiche and parody approaches, conveying meanings such as humor, cultural appreciation, identity expression, and social critique through deconstruction.
