The Transmediation of Raihan Robby’s Poetry: A Practice-Based Artistic Research

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) identify elements within poetry that can be interpreted and expressed into visual elements; (2) determine techniques and media for representing the meaning of poetry in the form of painting artworks; (3) visualize the creation of paintings based on the medium shift of poetry with an urban theme; (4) analyze public response to the use of the medium shift of urban-themed poetry in the form of painting artworks. This research is an Art Practice as Research study. The data collection for the concept of creating painting artworks was carried out through interviews, observations, and documentation. The data collection was conducted using a combination of interview instruments, observation, documentation, questionnaires, as well as exploration and experimentation. Data analysis was conducted using a combination of qualitative, descriptive, and quantitative analysis techniques. The results of the study show that the poems generated visualised objects in sketches that were developed into figurative forms with an expressive style. The medium used was acrylic paint on canvas; (3) the result of the medium shift of urban-themed poetry is a series of paintings titled Kotarium, Kota Imajiner, Jakarta Tengah Malam, and Ode Ondel-Ondel; (4) This medium received a total score of 98.7% from expert 1 and 93.4% from expert 2.
