Abstract

This research seeks to uncover the phenomenon of verbal violence on TikTok. Using a qualitative approach and case study research on the TikTok account @bacotinajagpp, this research focuses on three things, namely (1) types of verbal violence, (2) features of violent language, and (3) strategies of verbal violence. Four types of verbal violence and five variations of violent language were identified, applied implicitly and explicitly against generalized and specific targets. In addition, four strategies of verbal abuse by account holders were found. In this study, it is evident that verbal violence is used to reinforce men's position in the social hierarchy by threatening, insulting, and demeaning women. Language is used as a tool to reinforce negative stereotypes of women, demeaning and devaluing them. Continued verbal violence has the potential to result in normalization in society. Therefore, this research has the expected potential for further preventive action.
