Abstract

Three-phase induction motors are widely applied in industrial systems, yet the direct-on-line method often produces a high inrush current that may damage the motor and reduce power quality. This study designs an IoT-based Smart Soft Starter to address this issue while supporting modern automation needs. The device employs ESP32 as the main controller, ESP8266 for data communication, and PZEM-004t sensors to monitor phase voltage and current. The input voltage is gradually regulated by a TRIAC triggered through an opto-isolator, enabling the motor to reach nominal speed smoothly. Experimental results demonstrated that the starting current decreased from 1.0–1.2 A without the soft starter to 0.5– 1.0 A with the proposed system. Furthermore, motor operating data were successfully transmitted in real time to the ThingsBoard platform, allowing remote monitoring. Therefore, the developed system effectively reduces inrush current, extends motor lifespan, and enhances IoT integration in industrial applications.
