The value of kelong in Makassar literature as an expression of local wisdom

This study aims to reveal the meaning based on the forms of oral and modern kelong in Makassar. Revealing the meaning of kelong based on Riffater’s semiotic review, revealing the value of Makassar kelong and revealing the character of Makassar people through kelong. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design with a type of library research that is oriented toward cultural research. The sources of data were obtained from the results of literature reviews that contain the Makassar kelong text as primary data and recording data from informants as secondary data. Data analysis employs a model developed by Miles and Huberman. The activities in the data analysis include data collection, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions/verification. The results of the study reveal the Makassar kelong’s values include: 1) Religious values consist of (a) a relationship with God, (b) a relationship with humans, and (c) a relationship with the universe. 2) Nationalist values consist of (a) loving the country, (b) the spirit of nationality, (c) respecting diversity, (d) being willing to sacrifice, and (e) obeying the law. 3) Independence values consist of (a) hard work (b) creativity and innovative, (c) discipline, (d) resilience, (e) lifelong learning. 4) Mutual cooperation values consist of (a) cooperation, (b) solidarity, (c) family, (d) shared orientation, and 5) integrity values consist of (a) honesty, (b) example, (c) responsible, (d) love of truth. These values ​​then reveal the function of values, implementation of values, and the existence of Makassar kelong values ​​in people's lives today.
