Abstract-Shared educational values can obscure a more fundamental problem when learner freedom encounters the disciplinary demands of historical knowledge. This study examines the compatibility boundaries between John Dewey’s progressivism and Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s Sistem Among in history pedagogy within the Merdeka Curriculum. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with systematic-interpretive synthesis was conducted on 36 journal articles selected through a PRISMA 2020-guided process, complemented by two primary intellectual sources and two policy documents as additional analytical materials. The findings show that the two traditions converge around experience, learner autonomy, guidance, and contextual learning, yet their compatibility is constrained by the epistemic demands of history. Five boundaries emerge across historical experience, interpretive freedom, teacher or pamong authority, cultural embeddedness, and historical consciousness. The synthesis formulates conditional pedagogical compatibility as a conceptual framework linking pedagogical agency, pedagogical-cultural guidance, and the epistemic discipline of history. The framework treats compatibility as conditional upon preserving evidence, justification, openness to perspectives, and temporal distance. This shifts the analytical focus from assumed similarity to testing the conditions and limits of pedagogical convergence.
