The Relationship Between the Intensity of Smartphone Interaction and the Academic Achievement of Mechanical Engineering Students

Abstract

Smartphone usage intensity is a quantity measured by frequency and duration. This study aims to identify: (1) the relationship between the intensity of smartphone interaction with student learning achievement; (2) the amount of intensity regarding the frequency and duration of daily smartphone use of Mechanical Engineering students of SMK Negeri 3 Yogyakarta. This type of research is quantitative with a correlational approach. The population in this study were students in grades X and XI of Mechanical Engineering at SMK Negeri 3 Yogyakarta in the 2023/2024 school year, totaling 260 students. The sampling technique used proportionate stratified random sampling. The instrument for the smartphone intensity variable used a questionnaire, while learning achievement used report cards. Data analysis techniques using descriptive statistical analysis and pearson correlation product moment. The results showed that: (1) there is a positive relationship between smartphone interaction intensity and learning achievement with a value of rcount> rtable (0.284> 0.232) and has a correlation of 8%; (2) the average intensity of smartphone interaction is 10-20 times a day with a duration of 1-3 hours classified in the sufficient category.
