The Effectivenes of Block Learning System for XI Grade Students in the Machining Department of Vocational High School

Abstract

The learning system at SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta, especially in the Mechanical Engineering department, experiences various challenges and opportunities. One of the methods applied is the block system, which is expected to increase learning effectiveness. However, understanding the level of effectiveness of this method and the challenges faced by students still needs further research. This research aims to: (1) determine the effectiveness level of block system learning activities in the Mechanical Engineering department for 11th-grade students at SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta according to teachers' and students' perceptions; (2) identify the challenges faced by 11th-grade students in the learning process using the block system. This study is a descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The data sources included 7 teacher respondents and 43 11th-grade student respondents from the Mechanical Engineering department. Instrument validity was tested using the product moment correlation, and reliability was tested using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Data were collected through interviews and questionnaires using a Likert scale. Quantitative descriptive data analysis techniques were employed. The research findings indicate that: (1) teachers' and students' perceptions of implementing the block system in the Mechanical Engineering department are highly effective (79,19), covering three aspects: school management is highly effective (77,81), educator tasks are highly effective (80), and students are highly effective (79,76). (2) Challenges identified by students include: boredom (6,98), confusion with the block system (6,98), lack of focus (2,33), heavy workload (2,33), and difficulty understanding (2,33).
