Abstract

This article discusses warning images on cigarette packs, with a focus on the use of visual terror techniques and the meaning conveyed through images on cigarette packs. Conveying health messages must be supported by the right media. In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control resulting in the Pictorial Health Warning (PHW) policy. Smoking is the same as inhaling thousands of dangerous and addictive substances (causing dependence), because cigarettes contain 4000 dangerous chemicals, 70 of which are carcinogenic (can cause cancer) and other addictive substances. However, the number of people who smoke continues to increase, and the effects of chemicals will gradually become increasingly dangerous to health. Not only individuals who smoke (active smokers) but also individuals who do not smoke but inhale cigarette smoke (passive smokers). Analyze variations in health promotion used in warning images on cigarette packaging or called pictorial health warnings. The research design used is systematic Literature Review of articles and journals published in 2014 - 2023 which are accessed on the Google Scholar, DOAJ and PubMed portals in full text pdf form with the author carrying out narrative data synthesis to summarize the findings of the included research. The results of the literature search in electronic journals obtained 15 articles according to the keywords used Conclusion: The effects of health promotion found in the literature review suggest conceptual analysis rather than empirical studies, with a focus on the use of visual warning techniques and the meaning conveyed through images on cigarette packs.
