The journey of human life and the grandeur of nature: Art practice-based research on the creation of batik inspired by cultural visual icons of Cirebon and Japan
Dwi Wulandari, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta
Abstract
This study aims to (1) formulate the concept of batik pattern creation, (2) describe the creation process, (3) present the results, and (4) reflect on the researcher’s experience in creating batik painting motifs that combine the cultural visual icons of Cirebon and Japan. The research employs an art practice-based research methodology consisting of stages of exploration, design, and realization. Data was collected through literature and document studies to identify sources of ideas, concepts, techniques, and styles. The findings of the study are as follows: First, the concept of motif creation revolves around the journey of human life and the grandeur of nature, explored through the characteristics of Batik Mega Mendung, Cirebon Masks, the painting The Great Wave off Kanagawa, and the figure of the Geisha. Second, the creation process utilized traditional Indonesian batik techniques, beginning with preparing tools and materials, sketch application, wax resist (canting), dyeing, and wax removal (pelorodan). Third, the study resulted in five batik painting motifs titled “The Beginning Page”, “The Blossoming Flower of Life”, “Meaning Amidst the Roaring Waves”, “Reviving What Has Wilted”, and “The Line of Eternity”. Lastly, through the creation process, the researcher realized that every aspect of art is a product of deep reflection, enabling the expression of personal interpretations and the conveyance of messages through batik patterns that merge cultural traditions with individual perspectives. This study highlights the intricate interplay between cultural heritage and artistic innovation. It presents batik as a medium that bridges diverse visual languages while maintaining profound philosophical significance.
