Abstract
Waist flexibility and arm muscle strength: how do they contribute to gyaku tsuki hitting speed?
Abstract
Karate martial arts prioritize elements of strength and attack speed, especially on kumite. Empirically, the study aimed to test the correlation between waist flexibility and arm muscle strength against the speed of gyaku tsuki punches. A quantitative correlational study involving 30 Sleman County karateka (Age= M 16.1 ± SD 0.758). The measurement uses sit and reach tests for waist flexibility, push-up tests for arm muscle strength, and kinovea software as gyaku tsuki speed gauges. In this regard, the results showed that both variables (waist flexibility and arm muscle strength) together had a significant correlation with gyaku tsuki speed with a probability of 0.023. However, waist flexibility has a stronger role with a probability of 0.03 compared to arm muscle strength of only 0.037. These findings suggest that the components of flexibility and strength are components that need to be considered by the coach for the preparation of the exercise program in the future.
